Free Lyric
(31 min.)
Free Lyric revisits one of rap culture’s first ever viral moments: the public shaming of a 17-year-old Black female rapper. After her freestyle about an orgy spreads on the internet, O.G. Niki questions the immense backlash to her confession, exploring gender, coercion, consent and the early roots of online abuse from the rare perspective of “being canceled” before it was even a phrase, or a part of our culture. Weaving archival footage, dramatizations and observational material together as Niki launches a musical comeback, Free Lyric challenges our assumptions and complicity in the scandals and stories we choose to believe – and the ones we decide not to.
