Synopsis:

Free Joan Little examines the 1975 groundbreaking case of Joan Little who was the first woman in U.S. history to be acquitted for using deadly force to resist sexual assault. Joan was a Black incarcerated woman in North Carolina who killed a white guard who was trying to rape her. Little’s murder trial became a cause célèbre bringing together feminists, black power and anti-death penalty activists while catalyzing a nationwide discussion on sexual assault.a

Yoruba Richen’s most recent documentary, The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks won a Peabody award. Other recent work include the Emmy-nominated films American Reckoning, How It Feels to Be Free, and The Sit In: Harry Belafonte Hosts the Tonight Show. She directed an episode of the award-winning series, High on the Hog and her film, The Killing of Breonna Taylor won an NAACP Image Award. Yoruba was a Sundance Fellow and is a recipient of the Chicken & Egg Breakthrough Filmmaker’s Award. She is the founding director of the Documentary Program at the Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY.

Christalyn Hampton

Christalyn Hampton is an award-winning producer whose recent credits include: The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks which was won a Peabody Award, Rise and Rebuild: A Tale of Three Cities, and HBO MAX’s Through Our Eyes: Homefront episode where she produced the Atlanta segment for the NAACP nominated series. Recently, she has teamed with Geeta Gandbhir on an upcoming four-part docuseries for a major streaming network as well as a documentary that features one of the most decorated entertainers and businessmen of our day.
